Back-up rings sit behind seals and packings in a triplex pump to prevent extrusion — under high pressure, soft seal material tries to squeeze into the clearance gap, and the harder back-up ring closes that gap so the seal survives. Part 1080401 is a size- and position-specific ring, and it should be replaced any time the seal it protects is replaced; a worn or nicked back-up ring leaves the gap open and shortens the life of new seals dramatically.
