Water Filters Buying Guide
Inlet water filters protect the pump, not the engine
A mesh-screen bowl filter (commonly sold by port size and mesh count, such as 80 mesh or 50 mesh) installs ahead of the pump's water inlet and catches sediment, scale, and debris before it reaches the pump's valves and seals — the single cheapest insurance against a pump rebuild caused by dirty supply water. Match the filter's port size (FPT thread) to your inlet hose fitting.
Mesh count is a tradeoff, not a bigger-is-better spec
A finer mesh (higher mesh count, smaller openings) catches finer sediment but clogs faster and needs more frequent cleaning; a coarser mesh flows more freely but lets more fine debris through. Choose based on your water source — well or pond water with visible sediment benefits from finer mesh and regular cleaning.
Fuel and oil filters are engine-specific
Fuel filter assemblies (like Racor-style canister filters) and oil filters are sized to a specific engine or fuel system and are not interchangeable with the water inlet filters in this category despite being grouped here. Cross-reference the filter part number or replacement-for number against your engine's manual before ordering.
Water Filters FAQ
Do I need an inlet water filter if my pump already has a strainer?
A pump's built-in inlet strainer only catches coarse debris; an external mesh-screen filter ahead of it catches finer sediment before it ever reaches the pump, which matters most with well water, tank water, or any source with visible particulate.
How often should I clean an inline water filter?
It depends on your water source and mesh count — check it every few uses when starting out, and adjust the interval once you see how quickly it loads up. A restricted filter starves the pump of water, which can cause cavitation damage, so don't wait for a visible clog.
Is a fuel filter in this category the same as a water filter?
