The unloader valve redirects flow back to the pump inlet the instant you release the trigger, protecting the pump from dead-heading against a closed nozzle. A failing unloader shows up as surging or pulsating pressure, the engine or motor cycling on and off, or pressure that slowly bleeds down while the trigger is held.

Unloaders Buying Guide
Try cleaning before replacing
Before replacing an unloader outright, remove it and clean the piston and spring of debris or mineral buildup, then lubricate the moving parts — a sticking unloader is often a cleaning fix, not a parts fix.
Confirm with a pressure gauge
If cleaning doesn't resolve it, install a pressure gauge on the pump outlet to confirm the unloader is holding a stable set pressure before you condemn it and order a replacement.
Match GPM and PSI, not just thread size
Unloaders are rated for a specific flow and pressure range. One that fits your plumbing but is rated for the wrong GPM/PSI window won't regulate correctly even though it physically installs fine.

What are the symptoms of a failing unloader?
Pulsating or surging pressure at the wand (especially at idle), grinding or knocking from the pump head, soap not drawing through the downstream injector, and the motor or engine repeatedly starting and stopping under no-flow conditions.
Can a bad unloader damage my pump?
Yes — an unloader that fails to bypass flow properly can force the pump to work against dead-head pressure, which accelerates seal and valve wear well beyond normal use.
