Hose Reels Buying Guide
Match capacity to your hose
Reels are sized by hose diameter and length — a drum rated for 300 feet of 3/8-inch hose won't cleanly wind 1/2-inch hose. Check the capacity against the hose you actually run, and leave room for the leader hose and fittings. An overfilled drum rewinds poorly and puts extra strain on the swivel.
Manual, spring, or powered rewind
Manual crank reels are simple and nearly indestructible; spring-retract reels pull the hose back with a tug; powered rewind suits long daily runs on truck and trailer rigs. For mobile setups, confirm the frame and mounting footprint fit your trailer or truck bed before ordering.
The swivel is the wear item
The reel's rotary swivel lets the drum turn while the supply line stays fixed, and it wears with constant rotation under pressure. Carbide-seal swivels hold up far longer under daily commercial duty than standard seals. Confirm the inlet and outlet thread sizes match your hose and pump plumbing.
Hose Reels FAQ
Can I wind a longer hose than the reel is rated for?
It will fit poorly and rewind hard, and the extra side load shortens swivel life. If you're between sizes, step up to the larger drum.
Do I need a swivel at the reel, or can I plumb straight through?
You need the swivel — it's what lets the drum rotate while the inlet hose stays connected. Without it the hose twists and kinks every time you rewind.
