Plugs Buying Guide
QC plugs: the male half, sized to the socket
A quick-connect set is one plug (male nipple) plus one socket (female): the plug slides in, the socket's locking balls engage the plug's groove, and the spring-loaded sleeve locks it. The 1/4" profile covers guns, lances, and nozzles; the 3/8" profile covers higher-flow connections like hoses, reels, ball valves, and surface cleaners. Profiles must match exactly — a 1/4" plug will not lock into a 3/8" socket — and the common standard is the Foster industrial interchange.
Materials: brass, plated steel, stainless
Brass balances cost with good corrosion resistance in ordinary wash-water service and is the default for most QC plugs. Plated steel is harder and resists the wear of repeated insertion cycles better, making it the economical workhorse where corrosion is low. Stainless costs more but outlasts both in constant moisture, chemical injection, and soap lines — choose it when the fitting lives in harsh service.
Pipe plugs: seal the port, mind the rating
Allen-head and hex-head pipe plugs seal unused NPT ports on pumps, manifolds, and valves. Steel versions carry real pressure ratings (verify the rating on the specific listing — smaller steel plugs are commonly rated higher than larger ones), while brass suits lower-pressure ports. Use PTFE tape or liquid thread sealant on tapered threads, and don't overtighten brass — it cracks before steel does. European pumps (AR, Comet) often use BSP threads, so confirm NPT vs. BSP before ordering.
22mm adapters and OEM pump plugs
Consumer and European guns commonly use 22mm screw fittings, and ST-41-style adapters bridge them to NPT or quick-connect — stainless versions are manufacturer-rated to 5800 PSI (verify the rating on the listing). OEM pump plugs are a different animal: CAT drain and valve plugs, Comet drain plugs, and General Pump hex plugs are sized to exact pump models, and the o-ring or seal that mates with the plug should be replaced at the same time.
Engine and electrical plugs
This category also carries the plugs your engines and electric washers need: spark plugs matched to the engine model (for example, the NGK BPR6ES spec'd for Honda GX160–GX390 engines — cross-reference before substituting), oil drain plugs sized to the crankcase, and GFCI plugs for electric machines (125V/15A NEMA 5-15P and 20A NEMA 5-20P are the common ratings — verify the amperage on your unit's label). When in doubt, match the OEM part number, not the generic description.

What's the difference between a plug and a socket?
The plug is the male nipple half that inserts; the socket is the female half with the locking balls and spring-loaded sleeve. A working quick connection is always one of each, and both halves must share the same profile size (1/4" or 3/8") to lock together.
Will a 1/4" plug fit my 3/8" socket?
No. Quick-connect profiles must match exactly — a mismatched plug won't engage the locking balls and will leak or blow apart under pressure. If your system mixes sizes, use a proper adapter rather than forcing a fit.
Do I need thread sealant on pipe plugs?
Yes on tapered pipe threads (NPT): PTFE tape or liquid thread sealant is what makes the seal, not brute force. Snug the plug, then tighten — and go easier on brass than steel, since brass cracks under the torque steel shrugs off.
