Surface Cleaners Buying Guide
Size by GPM, not by driveway
Bigger is not automatically better: a 28" cleaner on a 4 GPM machine spins its bar too slowly to clean evenly, while the same machine on a properly sized 16" cleaner works efficiently. Start from your pump's data-plate GPM, apply the 4-inches-per-GPM rule, and only then pick a diameter. An oversized-for-your-flow cleaner is the single most common surface-cleaner buying mistake.
Nozzles and the spray bar
Cleaners under 24" almost always run two nozzles on one bar; larger decks can run up to four. Tip size follows your machine: divide the pump's GPM by the number of nozzles — a 4 GPM machine on a two-nozzle bar wants roughly a #2 orifice per tip (a 2502 is a 25° fan with a #2 orifice). Keep tips clean and matched; a clogged or mismatched tip makes the bar vibrate and stripe.
The swivel is the wear item
The rotary swivel that feeds the spinning bar is what wears out, and it tells you when: check the weep holes on the bottom of the swivel periodically. A slow seep is normal; water shooting out means the swivel seals are done and it's time for a rebuild kit or replacement. Stainless housings and commercial-grade swivels cost more up front but outlast plastic homeowner bodies under daily use, and casters or wheels keep passes consistent on uneven concrete.
Undercarriage cleaners and water brooms
Low-profile undercarriage cleaners (Hurricane-style) roll under vehicles to blast chassis, wheel wells, and underbodies, and flipper designs rotate to double as flat-surface cleaners. Water brooms are multi-nozzle bars aimed at wide rinsing rather than aggressive cleaning. Both are specialty tools — verify the inlet connection and the GPM/PSI ratings against your machine before ordering, since their plumbing differs from a standard rotary deck.

Why is my surface cleaner leaving stripes?
Striping usually means the bar isn't spinning at full speed — either the cleaner is oversized for your pump's GPM, or one tip is clogged or worn so the bar spins unevenly. Slow your walking pace, clean or replace the tips, and confirm the nozzle sizing matches your GPM divided by nozzle count.
Can I use a rotary surface cleaner on a wood deck?
With caution. Rotary cleaners concentrate a lot of energy in one path and can etch or fur soft wood, and you should never let the machine sit stationary on a soft surface. Keep it moving at a steady pace, and for delicate wood many pros prefer a wide fan tip on a wand instead.
How do I know the swivel needs rebuilding?
Watch the weep holes on the bottom of the swivel: slow seepage is normal, but water shooting out under pressure means the seals have failed. Vibration that doesn't go away after cleaning the tips is another sign the swivel bearings are worn.
