Spray Guns Buying Guide
Weep vs. non-weep
Weep guns bypass a small amount of water with the trigger released — the constant movement keeps the line from freezing, which is why weep designs are standard in car washes and cold-climate work. Non-weep guns shut flow off completely at the trigger, which is what most warm-weather operators want, but manufacturers warn against using non-weep guns in wintry conditions. Pick by your climate and duty cycle, not by price.
Match inlet, outlet, and ratings
The industry-standard pattern is a 3/8" FPT inlet from the hose and a 1/4" FPT outlet to the lance — confirm both before ordering, since consumer guns sometimes use different threads. Then check ratings against your pump: a 5000 PSI / 12 GPM gun (like Suttner's ST-2305 class) covers most commercial rigs, while lighter guns rated around 3000 PSI / 7 GPM suit smaller machines. Never run a gun rated below your pump's maximum pressure.
Trigger ergonomics matter on long jobs
Holding a trigger against several thousand PSI for hours causes real hand fatigue, which is why commercial guns advertise easy-pull or relax-action designs that reduce trigger force. If your crew washes all day, an ergonomic gun is a productivity purchase, not a luxury. Inlet-swivel versions are also worth considering — they let the hose rotate instead of twisting and fighting you.
Pairing the gun with a lance
The gun's 1/4" outlet is where the lance (wand) threads on, and lance length changes the job: short lances for close work and equipment, long or telescoping lances for siding, roofs, and fleet work. Match the lance's pressure rating to the gun and pump, and verify thread compatibility — an M22 or 22mm gun needs an adapter to take a standard 1/4"-threaded lance.

My gun dribbles water when I release the trigger — is it broken?
If it's a weep gun, that small bypass flow is by design — it's what keeps the line from freezing. If it's a non-weep gun and it leaks or dribbles at rest, the valve or seat is worn; many commercial guns use a unitized valve cartridge that's rebuildable, otherwise it's time for a replacement gun.
Can I reuse my old gun on a bigger pump?
Only if the gun's max PSI and GPM ratings meet or exceed the new pump's output — check the gun's markings or the manufacturer's specs. An underrated gun is a safety issue, not just a durability one: running 4000 PSI through a 3000 PSI gun risks a burst at the handle.
Why does the trigger get so hard to hold?
You're holding back full system pressure with your hand, and higher GPM machines make it worse. Easy-pull and relax-action gun designs cut the required force substantially — if your current gun wears you out, the upgrade is in the gun, not your grip.
